About Nasheko
Nasheko is a social enterprise dedicated to using green tourism as a tool to economically empower indigenous communities while offering meaningful, culturally immersive experiences to travelers. We want to create a green tourism platform for eco-conscious travelers from around the world who seek to go beyond conventional tourism — travelers who want to participate in local life, learn the cultures, and experience destinations in ways that support both people and the planet.
Founded by Leah Nashipae, a member of the indigenous Maasai community in Kenya, Nasheko was inspired by her firsthand experience of seeing travelers visit Maasai lands yet rarely engage with the community beyond observation, even as climate change brought challenges like drought, livestock loss, and forced migration. Nasheko was born out of the conviction that tourism can be a force for empowerment and environmental stewardship, ensuring that travelers benefit, communities thrive, and the environment flourishes.
In a global market that includes established eco-tour brands like Intrepid and G Adventures, Nasheko stands apart by prioritizing carbon-conscious travel, partnering directly with local operators, and channeling tourism revenue into community resilience and climate mitigation.
